Peony Season in South Africa

South African peonies flower in our spring and summer, which puts the season roughly from mid-October to late January. It is the opposite of the European season, which is why South African stems are shipped north when the rest of the world has none.

The window is genuinely narrow. Some years it opens early and closes fast, and a warm week can shorten it further. We do not pre-sell stems we cannot guarantee, so if a fresh peony bouquet is showing as unavailable it means the quality coming through that week has not met our standard. Checking back during the season is worth it, because availability changes week to week.

Peonies are seasonal and supply can change inside a week, so it is worth saying plainly what happens if your order is affected. Our team contacts you before anything about your order changes, not after it has been sent.

Can Peonies Grow in South Africa?

Peonies grow in South Africa, but only in a few places. Peonies need a proper cold winter to set buds, and most of South Africa simply does not get cold enough for long enough. Commercial growing is limited to cooler, higher-lying areas, and even there the harvest is small compared with the Netherlands or New Zealand.

That scarcity is most of the reason peonies cost what they do here. There is no large local supply to fall back on, so every bunch competes with the export market.

Fresh Peony Bouquets

A fresh peony bouquet is the most generous flower gift we sell. The heads are enormous, they open over several days, and they keep changing shape while they do it. Our florists build them either as straight peony bouquets or mixed with roses and delphiniums where the contrast suits the brief.

Stem counts vary with what is available. A ten stem bouquet reads as a proper statement, and twenty stems is the version people remember for years. If you want something for a specific moment, tell us in the order notes and we will arrange to suit it.

Pink Peonies, White Peonies and Red Peonies

Pink is the classic and the one most people picture, from the pale blush shades through to a deep cerise. Coral varieties open an apricot pink and fade paler as they go, so a coral bouquet looks like several different flowers across its life.

White peonies are the choice for weddings and for sympathy, where they read quieter and cleaner than pink. Deep red peonies are the rarest of the three and the most dramatic. Peony Roses and What to Call Them

You will see peonies sold as peony roses, and it causes more confusion than it needs to. They are not roses. The name stuck because a full peony head looks like an enormous, loosely packed rose, and some sellers lean on the comparison because everyone knows what a rose is.

If you came looking for a peony rose, you are in the right place. These are the real thing, grown and cut as peonies, and nobody who receives one mistakes it for anything else.

Silk Peonies and Artificial Peonies

Silk peonies solve the problem the season creates. They hold their colour and shape indefinitely, they need nothing from you, and they are available every month of the year rather than one season of it. Good silk peonies are convincing at arm's length, which is where most people see a flower on a table.

Fresh peonies are a Cape Town product for us. They are cut, conditioned and arranged here, and they go out by our own drivers rather than a courier, because a peony bouquet does not survive a depot. Order before 12pm, Monday to Saturday, and we will deliver the same day across most of the city.

Sending Peonies to Cape Town From Overseas

A good share of the peonies we send are ordered by someone who will never see them. From London, from Sydney, from a different time zone entirely. You are buying on trust and finding out how it went from a photograph days later.

Three things make that easier. Our drivers are our own, so there is a person here who knows where your flowers are rather than a courier tracking number. The card is handwritten in the studio before the bouquet leaves. And we have been doing this from Claremont since 1999, which is a long time to keep getting someone else's anniversary right.

Peonies Johannesburg and the Rest of South Africa

Fresh peonies do not travel to Johannesburg, Durban or Pretoria with us, and we would rather say so plainly than take the order. Peonies are too fragile for an overnight courier, and Fabulous Flowers will not send a bouquet that arrives bruised.

What we can send anywhere in South Africa is silk peonies, which arrive in the same condition they left in. If you need fresh flowers delivered in Johannesburg, we deliver there daily from our Johannesburg range instead.

How Much Do Peonies Cost in South Africa?

Peonies are among the most expensive cut flowers you can buy here, and they sit well above an equivalent rose bouquet. Three things drive it: the season lasts weeks rather than months, almost nothing is grown locally at scale, and every stem we buy is competing with an export buyer paying in euros.

How to Make Fresh Peonies Last

Peonies reward a little attention. Expect five to seven days from a bouquet that arrives in bud, and less from one already fully open.

• Trim two centimetres off each stem at an angle before the first water change.
• Change the water every second day and re-trim while you are there.
• Keep them out of direct sun and away from fruit, which ripens flowers faster.
• If they arrive tight, a warmer room will open them. A cooler room slows them down, which is useful if you are saving them for a date.
• Leave the ants alone if you see one or two. They come with the buds and they do no harm.

The peony carries more meaning than most flowers. It stands for prosperity, romance and a happy marriage, which is why it turns up so often at weddings and twelfth anniversaries. In China it has been the flower of honour and wealth for centuries.

If you want peonies outside the season, or you want them to last, yes. Good silk peonies hold their shape and colour for years and read convincingly at normal viewing distance. They are also the only peonies we can send outside Cape Town.

Will my peonies arrive closed or already open?
