How Twenty White Peonies Open, Day by Day

On the day it arrives, the bouquet is a cluster of tight, green-tinged buds, some with a few faint red flecks on their outer petals. That is how Bowl of Cream begins. Over the next few days the buds loosen, show a soft ivory, and then open into full, cupped, creamy white blooms packed with layer upon layer of petals. Peony Season in South Africa Is Short

Fresh peonies are only available in South Africa from roughly mid-October to late January. That short season is what makes twenty of them feel like an event rather than a delivery. This is a limited edition bouquet, and we make it only while we can source Bowl of Cream stems that meet our standard. When the season ends, it is gone until next year. Caring for a Large Peony Bouquet

Twenty peony stems need a large, wide vase with plenty of water, because the blooms grow much bigger as they open. If you do not have one big enough, split the bouquet between two vases. Trim the stems at an angle, add the flower food sachet, and remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Change the water and re-trim every two days, and keep the flowers out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit. To coax a slow bud, roll it gently between your fingers or stand the stems in slightly warmer water for an hour. With this care, peonies last around seven days.
