Why Bowl of Cream Is the White Peony Florists Love

Bowl of Cream is a double peony, which means each flower is packed with layer upon layer of petals. It was bred in the United States in the 1960s and is still one of the best-loved white peonies in the world, because of the size and shape of its blooms: big, rounded and cupped, exactly like the name. The buds start out green-tinged, sometimes with a few faint red flecks on the outer petals, and open to a soft ivory before settling into a full, creamy white. Fresh peonies are in season in South Africa for a short window, roughly mid-October to late January. Outside those months good fresh stems are very hard to find, which is part of why they feel so special to receive. This is a limited edition bouquet: we carry Bowl of Cream only while we can get stems that meet our standard, and when they are gone, they are gone until next season. How to Open and Care for White Peonies

We send peonies in bud because they last longer that way, and watching them open is half the gift. When they arrive, trim the stems at an angle, add the flower food sachet to a clean vase of cool water and take off any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Change the water and give the stems a fresh trim every two days. Keep the vase out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit. If a bud is slow to open, roll it gently between your fingers or stand the stems in slightly warmer water for an hour. Cared for like this, peonies last around seven days.

When to Send White Peonies

White peonies say something quieter than red roses, and often something deeper.
