Funeral Flowers created with love and care
Funeral flowers are the quiet language we use when words run out. A wreath on the casket, a standing spray at the altar, a soft bouquet delivered to the family home. Each one says the same thing in a slightly different way: we are here, we loved them too, we will not forget.
We have been hand-tying funeral tributes from our Claremont studio since 1999. Most of our orders are placed in the last twelve hours before a service, so our team works fast and quietly. Same-day delivery runs across Cape Town and Johannesburg on orders placed before 12pm. Nationwide sympathy gift boxes reach the rest of the country in two to four working days.
Choosing the Right Funeral Flowers
The right tribute depends on your relationship to the person who has passed. Immediate family usually sends the large casket spray or the main wreath. Extended family, friends and colleagues send standing sprays, funeral bouquets, or a sympathy arrangement to the home. If you are unsure, a classic white arrangement is never out of place.
White lilies speak to restored peace. White roses carry reverence and remembrance. Chrysanthemums are the traditional funeral flower across many cultures, carrying the meaning of death and rebirth together. Purple flowers suggest dignity and honour. If the family has a favourite colour or flower, lead with that.
Wreaths, Sprays and Standing Tributes
Larger tributes sit at the service itself. Our funeral wreaths are circular arrangements that represent eternity, usually placed on an easel beside the casket or at the entrance of the chapel. Standing sprays are tall, one-sided arrangements designed to be viewed from the front. Casket sprays sit directly on the coffin itself and are usually sent by immediate family.
The St Joseph Lily Flower Arrangement is one of our most-requested tall tribute pieces, built around classic white lilies in a heavy glass vase. For a softer formal option, the Pure Elegance Bouquet layers white roses and spray roses into a clean, elegant silhouette that carries well into the service or rests beside the altar. For a bespoke tribute, contact our florists directly and we will design something specific to the service.
Same-Day Funeral Flower Delivery in Cape Town and Johannesburg
Orders placed before 12pm are delivered the same day across Cape Town (including Claremont, Sea Point, Newlands, Camps Bay and Constantia) and Johannesburg (Sandton, Rosebank, Houghton and surrounding suburbs). Nationwide gift boxes reach most of South Africa in two to four working days, including Durban, Pretoria and the smaller towns a courier can reach.
We deliver directly to the service venue, the family home, or the funeral parlour. Include the address and a contact number at checkout and our team will handle the rest. For full timing and courier notes, see our delivery information.
Funeral Flower Etiquette and Sympathy Messages
A card matters as much as the flowers. Short, sincere messages land better than long ones. "Thinking of you and your family", "With deepest sympathy", or a single shared memory works. If you knew the person well, name them. If you did not, acknowledge the loss honestly.
If the family has requested no flowers, send a sympathy gift box or a plant to the home instead. A living plant is often welcome when cut flowers are not. For families observing Jewish, Muslim or Hindu funeral customs where flowers at the service may not be traditional, a sympathy basket or arrangement sent to the home in the days after is usually welcome. For the full range, browse our sympathy flowers and read the care notes on each arrangement.
Our Most-Sent Funeral Arrangements
These are the arrangements our team prepares most often for funeral services and sympathy deliveries.
The Lush Lily Flower Bouquet is our classic white-lily choice for the family home, available across both Cape Town and Johannesburg. The White Oasis Rose Bouquet is sent most often by colleagues and extended circles for its understated reverence. For a smaller, personal gesture, the Misty Meadow Flower Posy and the Mint Swirl Flower Bouquet are both Cape Town favourites, tied softly with green foliage. For larger services, or when you want the tribute to feel substantial, Creative Elegance brings lilies, roses and seasonal blooms together in a full, abundant vase piece.
Browse the full range above, or explore sympathy flowers if you prefer a softer arrangement for the family home rather than the service itself.
Beyond the Service: Memorial and Remembrance Flowers
Grief does not end at the funeral. Many of our customers send flowers weeks or months later, on a birthday, an anniversary, or the quiet first year. Memorial flowers and remembrance bouquets are designed for those longer moments of care. The Tranquility Flower Arrangement is often chosen for these later deliveries, gift-wrapped and built around soft, calming whites. A simple white rose bouquet or a peace lily plant sent to the home says the same thing a wreath said at the service, and often means more months down the line.
Frequently Asked Questions
What flowers are most appropriate for a funeral?
White lilies, white roses, chrysanthemums and carnations are the most traditional funeral flowers in South Africa and across most cultures. White signals peace and reverence. Lilies in particular symbolise the restored innocence of the soul. Purple flowers suggest dignity and honour. If the family has a specific request, follow that before tradition.
How do I make my own funeral flowers?
To make your own funeral flowers, start with fresh white lilies, white roses or chrysanthemums from a reputable florist. Trim the stems at a 45-degree angle. Remove any leaves that will sit below the water line. Bunch the stems loosely, tie with a single white or black ribbon, and place in a clear glass vase of fresh water. For the service itself, most people order a pre-arranged wreath or spray so the tribute holds up through the day. Our Cape Town and Johannesburg studios can prepare a piece to your brief in under four hours.
What flower means goodbye forever?
Yellow roses are often associated with farewell, though the older meaning is friendship and remembrance. Red roses carry deep grief and love. White lilies speak to the soul at peace. Chrysanthemums symbolise both death and the rebirth that follows. If you want one flower that says goodbye clearly, a single white lily or a white rose bouquet carries the message well.
What are some simple funeral flower sayings?
"With deepest sympathy." "Thinking of you and your family." "Forever in our hearts." "Gone, but never forgotten." "In loving memory of [Name]." If you knew the person, name a single memory instead. Short and honest lands better than long and formal.
How much do funeral flowers cost?
Funeral flowers range from small sympathy bouquets through to large standing wreaths and casket sprays. Pricing depends on size, flower selection, and whether you need same-day delivery. Browse the grid above for current prices, or contact our Claremont studio for a bespoke tribute.
Can I send funeral flowers the same day in South Africa?
Yes. Orders placed before 12pm are delivered the same day across Cape Town and Johannesburg. Outside those two cities, a sympathy gift box reaches most of South Africa within two to four working days. For services happening today, call or WhatsApp our Claremont studio directly and we will prioritise the order.
Where do I send funeral flowers, the service or the home?
Both are acceptable. Larger tributes (wreaths, standing sprays, casket arrangements) go to the service venue or funeral parlour. Smaller personal arrangements (bouquets, sympathy baskets) go to the family home. If you are close to the family, the home is often more meaningful because it arrives in the days after, when most other people have moved on.
What do I do if the family asked for no flowers?
Respect the request. Send a sympathy gift box, a plant, or a donation to the charity the family has named. A handwritten card on its own is also welcome. Plants are often a quiet exception because they live on after the service and do not require any care from a grieving household.
Can I order funeral flowers from overseas for a South African funeral?
Yes. Many of our customers are South Africans living in the UK, Australia, the United States, Canada and New Zealand who are sending home from abroad. Order through our website as normal, include the local delivery address, and we will handle the rest from Cape Town. Same-day delivery rules still apply.
Do you include a card with funeral flowers?
Yes. Every order includes a complimentary handwritten card. Add your message at checkout. If you are unsure what to write, leave the message field blank and our team will write "With deepest sympathy from [Your Name]" by default.
