Flowers Near Me: Fresh Blooms, Delivered Today
When you search "flowers near me", you want to know what is fresh, what is in season, and how fast it can reach you. Fabulous Flowers stocks fresh blooms daily at our three working studios in Cape Town and Johannesburg, sourced from local growers and international partners.
Roses lead our daily stock. Peony bouquets spike during the spring window. Tulips, orchids, hydrangea bouquet, sunflowers, and lily bouquet rotate through the year. Protea bouquets anchor our South African native range. Same-day delivery in CT and JHB if you order before 12 pm.
If you want the people behind the flowers, browse our florist near me page. For shopping experience, opening hours, and prices, see flower shop near me. This page is about the flowers themselves: types, seasons, longevity, meanings, and what is fresh right now.
What Flowers Are in Season Right Now in South Africa
South Africa runs opposite to the Northern Hemisphere, so our flower seasons land differently to UK and US florist calendars. A rough seasonal guide:
Spring (September to November): Peak peony window, fresh tulips, ranunculus, sweet peas, fragrant freesias, irises. Best season for variety and scent.
Summer (December to February): Sunflowers, hydrangeas, dahlias, gerberas, agapanthus, calla lilies. Hot weather flowers that hold up in heat.
Autumn (March to May): Roses peak, chrysanthemums, dahlias linger, ornamental cabbages, autumnal proteas. The Mother's Day window leans into roses and pink-led arrangements.
Winter (June to August): Proteas come into their own, pin cushions, leucadendrons, native fynbos species, hardy chrysanthemums, lisianthus. Best season for South African native arrangements.
The best sellers edit always shows what is freshest this week. The new flowers and gift boxes edit highlights latest seasonal additions.

Browse Fresh Flowers by Meaning and Message
Different blooms carry different traditional meanings. The shorthand most South African florists work from:
Red roses for romantic love and passion. The traditional anniversary and Valentine's flower. Pink roses for admiration, gratitude, and gentle affection. Often used for mothers, friends, and thank-you moments. White roses for purity, new beginnings, and remembrance. Used for weddings, sympathy, and milestones. Carnations for apology and a fresh start. White carnations specifically signal sincere intent. Chrysanthemums for sympathy, grief, and remembrance in European tradition. Sunflowers for joy, loyalty, and warmth. Tulips for declarations of love and new beginnings. Lilies for purity, hope, and motherhood. Forget-me-nots for true love and lasting friendship (Princess Diana's favourite flower). Proteas for resilience, transformation, and South African identity.
Browse romantic flowers for love-led arrangements, sympathy flowers for funeral and condolence orders, congratulations flowers for milestone moments, and get well soon flowers for recovery gifts.
Native South African Flowers: Proteas and Beyond
South Africa has one of the richest endemic flora in the world. The King Protea (Protea cynaroides), our national flower, is the most distinctive native bloom and the symbol of the Springboks rugby team and the Proteas cricket team. Pin cushions (Leucospermum), leucadendrons, ericas, and the rare red disa (Disa uniflora) are all South African endemics.
Our protea bouquets range brings native blooms into mixed arrangements. They hold longer than imported roses, photograph beautifully, and signal South African identity in a way no imported flower can.
How Long Do Fresh Flowers Last?
Properly conditioned cut flowers from a real florist last 7 to 10 days. Some blooms hold longer, some are shorter-lived:
7 to 10 days: Roses, carnations, alstroemeria, chrysanthemums, lisianthus, gerberas. 5 to 7 days: Tulips, peonies, hydrangeas, lilies, sunflowers. 3 to 5 days: Sweet peas, ranunculus, anemones (shorter-lived but worth it for the season).
Supermarket flowers, often already 5 to 7 days old when they hit the shelf, usually wilt in 2 to 3 days. Our florists condition every stem at the bench before dispatch, which extends the recipient's window.
How to Keep Fresh Flowers Fresh Longer
Six things, in order of impact:
- Trim 1 to 2 cm off the stems at a sharp 45-degree angle when you receive them. Fresh cuts let the stem draw water properly.
- Use the flower food sachet included with every Fabulous Flowers order. The formula has antibacterial agents that slow bacterial growth in the water.
- Change the water every 2 to 3 days and re-trim the stems each time.
- Keep the arrangement out of direct sunlight, away from heat sources, and away from air conditioning vents.
- Keep flowers away from ripening fruit. Bananas, apples, and tomatoes release ethylene gas that ages flowers fast.
- Mist delicate blooms (hydrangeas, peonies) lightly each morning. This keeps petals firm in dry weather.
Birth Month Flowers
Every month has two designated birth flowers:
January: Carnation and snowdrop. February: Violet and primrose. March: Daffodil and jonquil. April: Daisy and sweet pea. May: Lily of the valley and hawthorn. June: Rose and honeysuckle. July: Larkspur and water lily. August: Gladiolus and poppy. September: Aster and morning glory. (Forget-me-not is sometimes listed as September's flower too.) October: Marigold and cosmos. November: Chrysanthemum and peony. December: Narcissus and holly.
Send the recipient's birth flower for a thoughtful, personal gift.
Where Our Flowers Come From
Most of our fresh stock is sourced from South African growers in the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, and Gauteng. Roses come from local rose farms and international partners depending on season and variety. Peonies, when in season, are sourced from Cape Town's small specialist growers. Proteas come from Western Cape native flower farms.
Every stem is conditioned at our Claremont studio, Sea Point studio, or Johannesburg studio before it leaves for delivery. We do not ship stock from a wholesaler direct to the recipient. That extra step at the studio bench is why our arrangements arrive looking like the photo and last longer than supermarket equivalents.
Same-Day Fresh Flower Delivery from R450
Same-day delivery starts at R450 for our bouquet range. The 12 pm weekday cut-off applies in both Cape Town and Johannesburg. Saturdays we deliver until 1 pm with an 11 am cut-off. Standard delivery R150, free over R750.

Frequently Asked Questions
What flowers are in season right now in South Africa?
The current season changes the answer. Spring (Sep-Nov): peonies, tulips, ranunculus, sweet peas. Summer (Dec-Feb): sunflowers, hydrangeas, dahlias, gerberas. Autumn (Mar-May): roses peak, chrysanthemums, dahlias. Winter (Jun-Aug): proteas, leucospermum, leucadendrons, native fynbos species. The best sellers edit always reflects current freshest stock.
What are the longest-lasting cut flowers?
Carnations and chrysanthemums top the list, holding 10 to 14 days. Alstroemeria, lisianthus, and gerberas typically last 7 to 10 days. Roses 7 to 10 days. Orchids in arrangements 7 to 10 days. Tulips, peonies, and hydrangeas usually 5 to 7. Sweet peas and ranunculus 3 to 5. For longevity-led gifting, choose orchids, carnations, or silk flowers that last years.
What flowers grow best in South Africa?
Native species thrive without effort: proteas, pin cushions, leucadendrons, ericas, agapanthus, strelitzia (bird of paradise), and Cape jasmine. Imported flowers that grow well in our climate include roses, hydrangeas, sunflowers, gerberas, alstroemeria, and chrysanthemums. The fynbos biome in the Western Cape is one of the most biodiverse plant regions on earth.
What is the difference between fresh, silk, and dried flowers?
Fresh cut flowers last 7 to 10 days, look like the photo, but need water and care. Silk and artificial flowers last for years, need no maintenance, and travel safely by courier. Dried flowers (preserved naturally) hold their look for 6 to 12 months with proper storage and have a vintage aesthetic. Our silk flowers range is the best long-term gift; bouquet range covers fresh.
What flowers say "I'm sorry"?
Pink or white carnations are the traditional apology flower, symbolising sincere intent and a desire to make things right. Pink roses (admiration) and white roses (new beginnings) also work for apologies, especially for romantic partners. For more weight, send a mixed arrangement of pink and white blooms with a hand-written note.
What flower means "I'll wait for you"?
Astilbe (also called false spirea or feather flower) symbolises patience and dedication to a loved one. White astilbe specifically signals "I will still be waiting." It is rare in South African florist stock, so a more available alternative is forget-me-nots, which symbolise true love and lasting friendship.
What is the rarest flower in South Africa?
The red disa (Disa uniflora) is one of South Africa's rarest endemic orchids, found only on Table Mountain. The Welwitschia (Welwitschia mirabilis) of the Namib is one of the most unusual plants in the world. Among commonly cultivated florist flowers, the king protea is the rarest native that is widely available.
What flowers should I send for a funeral or sympathy?
White flowers lead. Lilies, chrysanthemums, white roses, hydrangeas, and orchids carry calm, dignified sympathy weight. Avoid bright reds and yellows for funerals. The sympathy flowers range is built specifically for this. For close family, sympathy gift boxes add chocolate, wine, or a personal note.
What flowers should I send for a birthday?
Pink-led arrangements are the safest universal choice. Birthday flowers covers our standard birthday range, birthday rose bouquet is our most-shipped birthday order, and birthday hampers add chocolate or wine. For someone you know well, send their birth month flower (see list above for the right bloom).
Are peonies expensive?
Yes, relatively. Peonies are seasonal, shorter-lived than roses, and require careful conditioning. A peony bouquet at Fabulous Flowers typically costs 30 to 50% more than an equivalent rose arrangement. Peonies are only reliably in stock from late August to early November in South Africa, and prices spike outside that window when stock has to be imported.
Are tulips expensive?
Tulips are mid-priced. They cost less than peonies, similar to mid-tier roses, and more than carnations or chrysanthemums. Fresh tulips at Fabulous Flowers are available year-round, with the best variety from August to November.
When do proteas bloom in South Africa?
Proteas bloom across most of the year depending on species. King proteas (the largest, most distinctive) peak from late autumn through winter (May to August). Pin cushions bloom mostly from spring (September) into summer. Leucadendrons are year-round. Our protea bouquets are available all year.
When does lavender bloom in South Africa?
Most lavender varieties grown in South Africa bloom from late spring (October) through summer (March), with peak in November and December. The Western Cape lavender farms have the most reliable seasonal harvest.
Does Pick n Pay sell roses?
Yes, Pick n Pay sells single roses, mixed bunches, and seasonal bouquets in selected stores. The stock is pre-bunched in plastic sleeves and usually a few days old. For a fresh florist arrangement that arrives looking like a gift and lasts longer, browse our rose bouquets range.
How much does a single rose cost?
In South African supermarkets, a single wrapped rose typically costs R30 to R50. At a real florist, a single premium-grade long-stem rose with proper packaging and a card runs R80 to R150 depending on stem length and variety. For a meaningful single rose, browse our red roses range.
Is 50 roses or 100 roses better?
50 roses symbolise unconditional, limitless love and are a grand romantic gesture. 100 roses are the ultimate, "I will love you forever" statement. 99 roses specifically mean "I will love you until the day I die." 12 roses mean "thinking of you 12 months a year." More is more meaningful, but a thoughtfully chosen 12 with a hand-written card often lands more powerfully than a count-driven bigger number. Browse 50 roses bouquet and huge bouquet of roses.
Can you buy just one rose?
Yes. A single long-stem rose is one of the most romantic flower gifts because the focus is the gesture, not the volume. Pair with a hand-written note for maximum effect. Available in red, white, pink, and other colours through our red roses and rose bouquets ranges.
How do I preserve fresh flowers permanently?
Three methods. Air drying: hang bunches upside down in a dark, dry, well-ventilated room for 2 to 3 weeks. Best for roses, lavender, hydrangeas. Pressing: flatten between heavy books with absorbent paper for 2 weeks. Best for daisies, pansies, ferns. Silica gel: bury blooms in silica crystals for 1 week to retain colour and shape. Best for roses and larger flowers. Once preserved, store away from light and moisture.
What was Princess Diana's favourite flower?
Forget-me-nots. She received them as a child from her brother Earl Spencer, and they became symbolic of her warmth, love, and lasting friendship. Forget-me-nots are also the traditional September birth flower in some calendars.
What is the difference between this page and your florist near me and flower shop near me pages?
Three different angles. This page is about the flowers themselves: types, seasons, longevity, meanings, care. Our florist near me page is about us as florists: the people, studios, and craft. Our flower shop near me page is about the shop: browsing, prices, opening hours, payment, online vs walk-in.
