The protea flower is one of the most striking blooms on earth, and South Africa's national flower. With its architectural form, jewel-bright bracts and remarkable staying power, the protea has become a symbol of the country itself: wild, resilient and quietly magnificent. This guide covers what the protea flower is, what it means, the best-known types from the king protea to the pincushion, how long the cut flowers last, how to grow them, and how to send proteas of your own.

What Is a Protea Flower?
A protea is a flowering plant in the Proteaceae family, an ancient line that has grown in southern Africa for millions of years. What looks like a single large flower is actually many tiny flowers, or florets, packed into a central cone and framed by colourful, petal-like bracts. That clever structure is what gives proteas their bold, almost sculptural look.
There are more than 1,400 species and varieties across the wider protea family, most of them found in the fynbos of the Cape Floristic Region. You can see the range in our protea flower collection and our hand-tied protea bouquets.

What the Protea Flower Symbolises
The protea is named after Proteus, the Greek sea god who could change his shape at will. Like its namesake, the protea takes countless forms, so it has come to symbolise change, transformation and diversity.
It also carries meanings of courage, resilience and hope. Because the plant survives fire, drought and poor soil and comes back stronger, proteas are often sent to mark new beginnings, to celebrate strength through a hard season, or simply to say you are tougher than you know. That makes them a thoughtful choice for congratulations, encouragement and milestone moments alike.

A Brief History of the Protea
Proteas are botanical survivors. Fossil evidence suggests the family is more than 300 million years old, one of the oldest flowering plant groups on the planet. The plants evolved to thrive in the Cape's demanding conditions: nutrient-poor soils, long dry summers and regular fire.
The Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus formally named the genus in 1735, after the shape-shifting god Proteus. Long before that, the indigenous San people used proteas for food, medicine and ceremony. Today the bloom appears on South Africa's coat of arms and gives the national sports teams their name.

The King Protea: South Africa's National Flower
The king protea (Protea cynaroides) is the largest and most famous of them all, and South Africa's national flower. Its flower head can reach the size of a dinner plate, with a crown of pink-to-crimson bracts around a soft central cone.
It is a showstopper in any arrangement. Our fresh Royal Protea Flower Bouquet puts the king protea centre stage, hand-tied in our Cape Town studio. For a bolder, sculptural display, our Protea Vase Arrangement sets the king protea among rustic textures and wild greens.

Types of Proteas and Pincushions
Beyond the king, the protea family is wonderfully varied. A few of the best loved:
- King protea (Protea cynaroides), the giant of the family and the national flower.
- Pincushion protea (Leucospermum), with rounded heads of fine, brightly coloured spikes that really do look like a pincushion. You will often spot them in our protea bouquets.
- Sugarbush (Protea repens), a nectar-rich, cone-shaped bloom and one of the most common wild proteas.
- Blushing bride (Serruria florida), a delicate, creamy favourite for weddings.
- Pink ice (Protea neriifolia), prized by florists for its long vase life and soft colour.

How Long Do Protea Flowers Last?
Proteas are one of the longest-lasting cut flowers you can buy. With their woody stems and slow-drying heads, a fresh protea arrangement typically stays beautiful for two to three weeks, far longer than most blooms.
To get the most from them, trim the stems on an angle, change the water every few days, and keep them out of direct heat. Better still, proteas dry beautifully. When the fresh display fades, hang the stems upside down in a cool, dark spot and you will have a striking dried arrangement that lasts for months.

How to Grow and Care for Proteas
Proteas are hardy but particular, and the golden rule is drainage. They evolved in poor, sandy, slightly acidic soils, so they dislike heavy clay and cannot tolerate rich, phosphorus-heavy fertiliser, which can actually kill them.
Plant them in the sunniest, best-drained spot you have, ideally on a slope or raised bed in full sun. Water young plants regularly until established, then ease off, as mature proteas prefer it on the dry side. Prune lightly after flowering to keep the shape, and feed only with a low-phosphorus fertiliser made for fynbos or acid-loving plants.
