Their story

A Cellars-Hohenort wedding in white, green and candlelight

Kim and Kyle's Cellars-Hohenort wedding took place on 7 November 2020 at The Cellars-Hohenort hotel in Constantia, Cape Town, with flowers by Fabulous Flowers and Gifts of Claremont. Kim and her mom planned the whole wedding in one month. The palette was white and green: white roses, white stocks, white lilies and white alstroemeria, with eucalyptus and ivy, and candles on every table. Crazy Little Thing Photography photographed the day.

The Cellars-Hohenort meant something to this family before the first flower arrived. Kim's parents held their own wedding reception there 38 years earlier, so when plans had to change quickly, Kim knew where she wanted to be. Fabulous Flowers was the wedding florist in Cape Town for the day, from greenery hung in the garden trees to a long candlelit table inside.

I · Their story

An intimate Constantia wedding, planned in one month

Kim and Kyle met in 2015. Kyle knew straight away: after their first meeting he invited Kim to his sister's wedding up the West Coast that April, and to a cousin's wedding in Rotterdam that June.

They got engaged in January 2020 in a garden in Edinburgh and planned to marry at Matjiesfontein in 2021. Then 2020 changed everyone's plans. Kyle's parents and his older brother were living in the UK, and when a window opened for them to travel, Kim and Kyle took it.

Above all, Kim wanted her dad to walk her down the aisle. He did, and he made a speech too. The guest list was small, as weddings were that year, and the early November weather was not quite what Kim had hoped for. Inside, the candles took care of that.

II · The garden

Greenery hung in the trees at the Cellars-Hohenort

Out in the garden, bunches of eucalyptus and leafy greenery were tied with twine and hung from the branches at different heights, so they turned slowly in the air above the paths.

The Cellars-Hohenort sits in about nine acres of gardens and vineyard beside Kirstenbosch, so the setting already does most of the work. Hanging greenery adds to a garden like that without competing with it. It also suits a wedding planned at short notice, because foliage is far easier to source in quantity than one particular bloom.

Indoors, the same greenery ran along the arms of the white chairs as a loose garland of eucalyptus, variegated leaves and small white flowers.

III · The details

White alstroemeria in leaf-lined glass vases

On a rustic wooden riser stood a row of small square glass vases, each lined with a green leaf and filled with white alstroemeria, beside a tall glass vase lined the same way.

Lining a vase with a leaf hides the stems and the water and turns plain glass into something that looks made for the day. Against old wood it gives you green, white and warm brown, the three colours that carried the whole wedding.

White alstroemeria is a quiet hero for a wedding like this. It lasts well, it comes in generous stems, and in a small vase it reads almost like a lily. For flowers in the same spirit at home, see our white flowers.

IV · The reception

A candlelit long table with white roses and a greenery runner

The reception was one long table under the windows, dressed end to end with a runner of ivy and eucalyptus. Along it stood white ceramic bud vases of white roses and stocks, pillar candles of different heights, and floating candles in tall glasses.

A single long table suits a small wedding. Everyone sits together, nobody is at the back, and the flowers become one continuous line rather than a set of separate centrepieces. Keeping the arrangements low means guests can talk across the table, which matters more when everyone at it knows each other well.

Candles do what flowers cannot on a grey day. They warm the white roses, pick out the glass and make a room feel full even with a small guest list. We share more ideas like these in our guide to wedding flowers for tables, and you will find the same white roses in our white rose bouquets.

The Cellars-Hohenort, Constantia

The Cellars-Hohenort is a hotel at 93 Brommersvlei Road in the Constantia Valley, Cape Town. It brings together the restored 18th-century Klaasenbosch wine cellars and the manor house of the Hohenort, set in about nine acres of gardens and vineyard right beside Kirstenbosch.

For a florist, a hotel like this offers two settings in one: a mature garden that needs very little added, and rooms with old wood and leaded windows that suit candlelight. A greenery-led palette moves easily between the two.

Planning notes

Planning a wedding in a month: what this one taught us

  1. Choose a place that already means something

Kim chose the hotel where her parents held their reception 38 years earlier. A venue with a story behind it needs less decoration to feel personal.

  2. Let greenery lead

Eucalyptus, ivy and garden foliage are far easier to find in quantity at short notice than one particular flower. White roses, stocks and alstroemeria then add the finish.

  3. Plan for the weather with candles

Early November in Cape Town can be grey. Pillar and floating candles along a long table keep a room warm and bright whatever the sky does.

  4. Seat a small guest list at one long table

One table keeps everyone together and turns the flowers into a single line from end to end. See our wedding flower packages for what a table like this costs.
